I’ve been really excited about the outdoor lighting kit and getting to use it. Last weekend Chris borrowed it from stores to get some of his work done, so when he was ready I took it out for some practise myself. I decided I want to document things around town that are somewhat banal and used by almost everything. I want to take these images at night because the streets are quiet and these ‘things’ aren’t really being used. I want there to be a sense of isolation in the images and I want the subjects to be common to most.
The first images I took were of a bus stop quite literally a two minute walk from my house. My favourite of the two is the landscape image simply because I feel the lighting looks better in this photograph and its a stronger image all together. What bothers me about this image is perhaps the flash on the glass and the car parked behind it. I would have preferred for the car to have no been there and I'm not quite sure how to avoid the flash reflection.
This is an image of a post box which I took. The problem I have with this image is the strong shadow to the right I feel like it gives the image a sort of imbalance. To solve the problem I was going to add a soft box on the right hand side to add some light but still keep a shadow in the image but unfortunately the battery died and I had to end the shoot. The good news is I have booked the lighting kit out again for next weekend which means I get to include more practise, the bad news is I was using the Cannon 5D here which isn't available again this weekend so I'm going to have to resort to using the 400D. Which is fine anyways and particularly for practise.
I agree the lighting is off; it takes your eyes away from the postal box, but I still like the way it looks.
